Education

The barriers to broadening agroforestry adoption are challenging but not insurmountable. Broadening adoption requires that farms have access to affordable technical service providers who have the capacity and skillset to help plan and implement agroforestry systems. We've designed our programs to broaden adoption by training farms directly. Once trained, farms can support one another through participatory learning networks. Additionally, we provide support and training to technical service providers working in the agriculture, conservation, and forestry sectors.

Field Consultancy Program

We collaborate with farms to design and implement agroforestry practices that protect and enhance ecosystem function, positively increase land use, and improve livelihood strategies. We help participants understand agroforestry’s biophysical, social, and economic outcomes and identify the most appropriate practice that aligns with participants’ goals. This dynamic process is flexible, adaptive, and innovative.

There are two ways to work with us:

  1. Grant-funded programming.

  2. Sliding Scale Fee-for-Service

Train the Trainer (TnT)

This program utilizes a peer-to-peer knowledge-sharing framework. We teach technical service providers about the usefulness of agroforestry interventions. With specific learning outcomes in mind, our classes examine the policies that prevent or encourage adoption, the socioeconomic and biophysical influences of agroforestry, production cycles, impacts on livelihoods, landscape sustainability, risks, and trade-offs. Training includes both conceptual and experiential opportunities for learning.

Field School (Under Development)

As an extension of our Field Consultancy, our six-week Field School utilizes both conceptual and experiential learning to explore the rich history of agroforestry and the policies preventing or encouraging broad adoption. Students will learn to plan and implement agroforestry-specific systems and associated practices. Our for-profit, Interlace Agroforestry Farm in Whallonsburg, New York, is the host to our field school.
