Bristol, VT – A newly launched partnership between Interlace Commons and Canopy Farm Management will unlock the potential for Northeastern agriculture to become a natural climate solution, filling a key gap in an emerging industry in the region. The organizations bring a combined 20 years of experience to this vital work. They will now collaborate to provide high-quality plant material, establishment, and maintenance services to farms implementing agroforestry and conservation-related practices.
Agroforestry is the intentional integration of trees and shrubs into crop and animal farming systems to create environmental, economic, and social benefits. Two key issues that agroforestry can address include (1) enhancing food security and (2) preserving ecosystems within agricultural lands by promoting food production in multifunctional landscapes. The contemporary use of agroforestry practices is experiencing a historic moment. After nearly 40 years of inconsistent funding, the agroforestry sector has begun to receive unprecedented financial support from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and other sources.
Organizations and landowners face significant challenges in efficiently and effectively implementing tree-based land uses. The current availability of tools is insufficient to meet the demand for implementation services. Interlace Commons and Canopy Farm Management will work closely to address the specific limitations that face the Northeast.” We value partnering with other businesses and institutions, combining resources and expertise to magnify the impact of our work. We could not be more excited to work alongside Canopy to expand their work in the northeastern United States,” comments Meghan Giroux, Executive Director of Interlace Commons. “Canopy has developed state-of-the-art tools to establish and manage agroforestry and conservation projects in the Midwest. We’re ready to scale up and excited to work with Interlace Commons to expand our capacity in the Northeast,” says Kevin Wolz, CEO of Canopy Farm Management.
Interlace Commons connects farmers and landowners with the funding resources they need to plan and implement ancient and modern forms of agroforestry, trains service providers, and conducts research.
